Eden FX, a Point.360 company, was formed in 2000 by post production notables, John Gross and Mark Miller. Eden is a leading provider of visual effects for Episodic Television, Feature Film, and Commercials.
Q. Can you tell me a little about the
team at Eden FX?
Eden FX is a medium size company with a talented staff of 3D artists and compositors. Our team is unique in that they can easily switch between visual effects for television and visual effects for features. Our team is very creative and fast in handling television's impossibly short schedules and low budget. They are also detail-oriented and patient in handling feature film work with its pixel-level perfection and multiple revisions over long schedules. It's unusual to find artists that can go back and forth between the two different types of work-flows as seamlessly as our team can.
Q. What have you worked on in the past?
Our projects are pretty equally divided between TV and features. In addition to compositing, we create CG models, virtual environments, matte paintings, and 'invisible effects'. We also specialize in vanity work and fix-it work. Listed below are some highlights from our filmography:
Television:
Lost, Surviving Disaster, Ghost
Whisperer, Life After People, 24, Pushing Daisies, The Office,
The Unit, Chuck, Moonlight, Army Wives, Studio 60 on the
Sunset Strip, Fringe, Surface, Brothers and Sisters, Invasion,
Alias, NCIS, Six Feet Under, Amazing Race, Star Trek: Enterprise
Feature Films: Benjamin Button, Across the Universe, Get
Smart, The Last Mimzy, Nim's Island, Idlewild, Spider-Man 3,
Hellboy, Superman Returns, Syriana, The Passion of the Christ,
Beer Fest
Q. Why do you choose Fusion to accomplish your post production work?
We have
built a Fusion pipeline with a fast render farm complimented with many custom tools and scripts that automate redundant work. This allows our team to spend more time on shots and less time struggling with minor tasks. That flexibility combined with Fusion's speed and accuracy makes it a smart choice for a facility like Eden FX.
Q. Tight deadlines, budgets, and large shot counts put a lot of pressure on the artistic team. How
does Fusion help you achieve results in a timely and
budget-wise manner?
Deadlines, budgets, and large shot counts--all put an enormous amount of pressure on the artistic team and supervisors. If not for Fusion's speed and robust tools, we would have been forced to try another solution. In cases where there are a large number of similar shots in a sequence, Fusion's pipeline can easily be configured to process the entire sequence with consistency, without sacrificing quality, and often ensures a fast turnaround.
Q. What are some of your favorite tools in Fusion and how do they help in production?
My favorite tools in Fusion vary. My favorite aspect of Fusion, by far, is its
scripting ability. Whenever possible, I like to automate anything we need to do more than a
few times. Automating as much as possible saves time and reduces the chances of simple
errors.
Kin to that, my next favorite tool would be the ability to create custom
macros for the exact same reason. If I can build a kit that can be reused often which is
comprised of several tools, while exposing only the attributes that need adjustments, that
is truly helpful.
To be fair, and answer the question specifically, my favorite tools in Fusion
would have to be the color corrector and the particle system. The color corrector
because without it, where would we be? It is fast, accurate, and very easy to use. The particle
system is just plain impressive. I am by no means an expert with particles in Fusion but
I am constantly learning new things. Having the particle engine as an option in Fusion gives
it an edge.
Q. Does your team generally make use of Fusion's 3D environment, and if so, how?
How important is 3D compositing to how your team works?
It seems we are using Fusion's 3D compositing more each week. It is becoming our preferred method of compositing when the shot allows. Combining elements rendered from a 3D app with additional 3D compositing effects and layers within Fusion allows us to bring more realism to our work with ease.
Q. What are Eden FX’s plans for the future?
By the end of the year, we will complete our move into our newly-designed Hollywood facility. We will continue to provide the highest quality visual effects while expanding our creative team, refining our efficient pipeline, and increasing our exposure in the industry. |
