Q: Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I am 21 years of age, and live in France. I was Co-Director, Artistic Director, and Lead Compositor of Sushi Express, my end of school short film. I also did the commercial brand opening title sequence in Fusion 5.3.
Q: What made you decide to become a VFX artist?
Before I graduated my VFX and Compositing studies, I was a carpentry graduate. I remember that I did some technical drawings for industrial carpentry and didn’t find it artistic enough. So, rather than studying the anatomy by myself at home, I decided to go to Art FX at Montpellier. For the past three years I studied all aspects of CG and the movie industry (scenarios, artistic direction, story boards, concept design, 3D texturing, camera mapping, compositing, matte painting, etc.). Now looking back, I realize I still have a lot to learn but I know that I would like to work in the CG industry.
Q. What do you love most about your work?
In spite of the fact that it is a very precarious job, 1 week here, 2 days there, I really like the creative aspects of the CG industry. I would like to work with a team to see from the beginning of the project, script to finish, as in my film, Sushiexpress.

Q. What artist/event/person inspires you?
I am very inspired from the streets and ‘old school genre’ mixed with 30’s and 70’s graphic arts. Pop art and motion design influence me as well. It is really fun to get vintage designs and put in some 3D and coeval lifting. I’ve learned a lot from Theodore Groeneboom and Thomas Laroca, VFX Supervisor at Mikros Paris.

Q. How long have you been working with Fusion as an artist?
I don’t consider myself an artist as yet. I have been using Fusion, it is my first compositing software, for the past two years at Art FX.

Q. How did you come up with the ideas for the film?
Partnering with Vincent Cubells, we created all the preproduction for Sushi Express two years ago. He brought all the inspiration and narration from the ‘black movie genre’ and Martin Scorses’ movies. I brought the artistic direction, the look of the film is inspired from ‘contemporary bad guy’ movies, such as Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino’s movies.

Q. What are you most proud of in this project?
As with all projects, I am proud that we FINISHED the short within the timeframe. I am proud of the fact we succeeded in managing the team and transmitting my direction and design vision for the movie.
Q: What are some of your favourite tools in Fusion?
I don’t really know which are my favourites, I like the Blur custom tool of course and the 3D tools too. I don’t think it’s so much the tools, as the fact that we can navigate and drag nodes on the viewer with only one hand. Everybody on my team laughed when I said that with Fusion we can virtually do all the compositing with only one hand.

Q: I understand you are hoping to come to Canada. What are your plans for the near future?
I am still young and would like to improve my skills by joining a team of great artists. I would like to travel around the world and touch on all the artistic domains: concept art, motion design, video games, VFX in movies, shooting supervision, and commercial projects. I will go anywhere I can bring my creativity.
