Avatar HolotableTo The Artists of Avatar

eyeon would like to congratulate Blur Studio, Hybride Technologies, and Prime Focus for their dedication and hard work on James Cameron's newest technological film achievement, Avatar.

Avatar is a visual effects heavy, 3D sci-fi fantasy set in the future on the world of Pandora. A group of marines must combat the indigenous people, the Na'Vi, to gain access to an energy-rich mineral worth millions back on Earth.

This film is expected to be one of the biggest films of the year, with visual effects that have already been praised as technical excellence with remarkable animated rendering.  Avatar takes the art of animation and 3D filmmaking to a higher level than ever before.

To all the artists who have worked on this tour de force, we would like to offer our compliments and we look forward to seeing the great success that is Avatar. Without you, there would be no Pandora.

Forum ImageForum Posting of the Month

Each month we will post a new gem from the forums. Some will be helpful, some will be satirical, some will be entertaining. Enjoy them all.

First posting of the year is from Pigs Fly Forums ~ Generation Script Annotations To Xml

Is there a script to put the annotations (saved as a text file) into 1 XML file which can be opened and edited by excel? The ideal would be if the information from the excel changes would also go back into the annotation text files (and therefore also back into generation). This would be a mayor advantage for the administration of our projects.

Thanks for the effort!

Studio News Month Year

AvatarPrime Focus Used Fusion As The Compositing Application On All Avatar Shots

Chris Bond, President & Senior VFX Supervisor, Film VFX, North America, Prime Focus, had this to say about his studio's use of Fusion on the movie Avatar.

"From the very beginning of any stereoscopic film project, including James Cameron's Avatar, we work in stereo. This applies for every shot, and on Avatar, Fusion 64bit allowed us to quickly prototype the shots and control the stereo workflow.

We even used Fusion's 3D toolset to bring in cameras and assets to assist with stereo placement.

Make no mistake - Fusion was as important to us delivering the show as the artists working on the project - that's why Fusion is installed at every artist's station, whether it's compositing, 3D or any other department."

The Imaginarium of Dr. ParnassusPeerless Camera Creates Art For The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

Terry Gilliams's film, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is wildly imaginative. The long awaited, last film of Heath Ledger is coming to the big screen in North America this month.

The elaborate visual effects produced by Peerless Camera have been drawn from Gilliam's boundless imagination and inspiration from American gothic painters.

Animation World Network talked to John Paul Docherty, of Peerless Camera, about the work the team did for the film. Read more here.

Flash ForwardEden FX Crashes Into The Future With Fusion

Imagine if the whole world briefly lost consciousness simultaneously and witnessed a global, sixth-month flash forward. That's the premise of the trippy, sci-fi series Flash Forward, created by Brannon Braga and David Goyer.
Many studios worked together to bring this time-warp action television show to the screen.

Eden FX worked on two big set pieces: episode four has the bus crash and episode seven has the rooftop suicide. They used a combination of Fusion and Lightwave. Read more about the VFX work on Flash Forward here.
