Spin VFX Brings A Legion
of Angels To Earth
Eric Doiron, the Compositing
Supervisor at SPIN VFX, along with a crew of
nearly 50 artists, worked on Legion for 24
weeks.
The team's primary task on Legion
was adding CG wings to Kevin Durand's character,
Gabriel, and later to Michael, played by Paul
Bettany. Several shots required full digital
doubles for both actors. In one shot, composited
by Jeff Campbell, VFX Supervisor at
SPIN, they created a full CG double for
'Gladys' (Jeanette Miller) who climbs up a wall
and across the ceiling of an all CG
environment. The Spin VFX team was also
called upon for several matte paintings and set
extensions. Read more about their work here.

Switch
VFX On The SAW Series
Recently we spoke with Gudrun
Heinze about Switch VFX's work on the SAW film
series. This is what she had to
say... "We've worked on SAW III, SAW
IV, SAW V and SAW VI. On Saw VI we did about
190 shots
.
In the first arm
removal shot, we had to clean up the background to
remove her blue screened arm. We created a
clean plate with the Paint Tool, tracked it and
rotoed her and the foreground table back on top
minus the blue screened arm. The Rotoscoping tools
are great in V5 & 6 of Fusion. They're
intuitive to use and flexible, especially with the
outer polyline option for sections of your roto
that need a softer edge. "

frightening work here.

Feature-quality VFX for
Episodic TV Using Fusion
Encore
Hollywood has been widely acknowledged as
the gold standard for television postproduction
for decades. What isn't as well known is that for
the last eight years, Encore has also provided
full-service visual effects for the film and
television industries.
In addition to touch-ups, CGI is
also widely used to create imagery integrated into
a particular shot. The title character in My Name
is Earl was often attacked with baseballs or
arrows that we would build and composite using a
combination of Autodesk 3D Max and Fusion. Read more

Introducing Excerpts From
Beta Blog
Now
from us to you, interesting info from eyeon
artists and developers relating to Fusion and
Generation.
The
first extract for 2010.
First thing is to understand what
VariBlur does. It doesn't take each source pixel
and spread it out into the result. Instead, for
each output pixel it gathers from the source. That
means if the BlurImage has a 0 value next to a
non-0 value, the result will have a non-blurred
pixel next to a blurred one - ie. a hard
transition.
So
for example, given the BlurImage you are using
(with the MatteBol disabled), pixels of the
BlurImage within the blue ball indicate no blur,
pixels within the red ball indicate some blur, and
all other pixels indicate lots of blur. So at the
edge of the blue ball, on the outside of the ball
there's lots of blur, and then the next pixel has
no blur, which is why you see its AA'd edge. This
is one reason why VariBlur isn't very good for
DoF/Z blur.
So the BlurImage will need to be a circle
of 'mid' values over and around the blue ball
(spreading out around the ball enough to cover
however much blur you want), and the a circle of
'high' values over and around the red ball (also
spreading out around the ball enough to cover
however much blur you want). Where the 2 circles
of values overlap (if they would), then you're
kinda screwed because you can't indicate both
'mid' values for 'gathering in' of blue ball
pixels and 'high' values for 'gathering in' of red
ball pixels. This is another reason why VariBlur
isn't very good for DoF/Z
blur.

Prime Focus Releases
Deadline 4.0
Prime
Focus Software has announced the release of
Deadline 4.0, the company's easy-to-use
administration and rendering toolkit.
"Even during the early stages of the beta
program, it was obvious Deadline 4.0 was going to
be an extremely feature-rich release. The new
slave throttling and network load reduction
features are brilliant at handling larger data
files and keep Deadline highly responsive to users
at all times. The development of Deadline
continues to remain highly inventive with lots of
new functionality whilst remaining stable and
reliable under fire in production." ~
