Award-winning visual effects studio develops visual effects For New Line Cinema’s latest film: “Cellular”.

Burbank, CA (Aug 2004) – VES Award winning studio gets the call to create over 100 invisible effects for New line film Cellular, starring Kim Basinger and William H. Macy.

Final Destination II director, David Ellis and Editor Eric Sears, decided to team up again with Visual Effects Supervisor, Ben Girard and his well known studio, Digital Dimension.

The story within the action thriller Cellular is about a young man receiving a random call to his cell phone that sends him into a high-stakes race against time to save a woman's life… With no knowledge of Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger) other than her hushed, panicked voice on the other end of the tenuous cell phone connection, Ryan (Chris Evans) is quickly thrown into a world of deception and murder on his frantic search to find and save her.

The work assigned to Digital Dimension ranged from designing and inserting all cell phone displays, adding wounds to actors, and adding CG mud to cars. One of the most challenging sequences, Girard explains, was where our team was required to turn a car into a CG muddy car.

The toolset that created the imagery included Discreet 3DS Max, Russ Anderson’s SynthEyes, and eyeon Digital Fusion for the compositing.

Digital Dimension also recently completed visual effects work on Warner Brothers’ “Exorcist: The Beginning”

Their live action integration expertise was called upon, once again, to defy reality in the new chapter of a cult classic.

In total, Dimension completed over 64 visual effects shots from green screen removal to creating computer generated crows. The amount of work done in a short amount time was quite astounding recalls Ben Girard, president of the studio. “The Exorcist schedule was “hellish” from the get go, we had less than 8 weeks to create full CG shots from the time we received the plates to the final delivery” Ben continues.

Amongst the most challenging shots the studio was faced with, were the shots where CG crows would need to hold up to fill the entire screen. Ben notes “We decided to develop the CG crows in parallel to increase efficiency. While the modeling and lighting was happening, another team was developing the fur and feathers system”.

Stephane Barbin, CG Supervisor on this film claims “Due to 3DS Max open architecture, we've been able to raise the limits of our creativity. We feel that we can always choose from multiples solutions within 3ds max to overcome our day to day CG character challenges”. The toolset responsible for the imagery produced by the studio included Discreet 3DS Max, Character Studio, HairFX (Turbo Squid), Morph-O-Matic (Di-O-Matic), and Eyeon Digital Fusion for the compositing.

Furthermore, Digital Dimension was the lead visual effects studio on the upcoming films Blade: Trinity and Cellular and recently completed numerous visual effects shots for Scooby Doo 2 and A Cinderella Story films.
