"I first worked with DFX+ 4 at DreamWorks Television for the recent Sci-Fi Channel mini-series, Taken. DFX+ 4 was brought on
because of the great toolset, overall stability, network rendering, intuitive workflow, price point, production pipeline integration,
and beautiful composites. Basically, we used it all the way through our pipeline and I would definitely use DFX+ on future projects."

DFX+ is eyeon’s Digital Video Compositor. It is a modular application based on the image engine and architecture of our lead film
compositing solution, Digital Fusion. The primary difference between the two applications besides the modular toolset is color precision.
DFX+ processes color at 8 bits per channel. That means 256 red values, 256 green values and 256 blue values
for a total of 16,777,216 color possibilities. DFX+ also provides an alpha channel, also with 256 values calculating between opaque and transparent,
or white and black.
For those working at either NTSC or PAL resolutions, the standard color-processing pipeline is 8 bits per channel, so DFX+ is capable
of handling the full color depth of standard and high definition video.

Frequently Asked Questions |
 |
 |
Q: What does 8 Bit mean?
A: DFX+ processes color at 8 bits per channel. That means 256 red values, by 256 green values and 256 blue values
for a total of 16,777,216 color possibilities. DFX+ also provides an alpha channel, also with 256 values calculating between opaque and transparent,
or white and black.
Q: Do I have color correction tools?
A: Yes, the base version of DFX+ contains color correction tools for gain, gamma, brightness, saturation, and hue.
Module 2 allows you more extensive color correction using the CC tool. The CC tool offers automatic color matching between plates,
histogram adjustment, and custom ranges for correcting shadows, midtone areas and highlights.
Q: Can DFX+ pull a key against a green or blue screen?
A: Yes, there are 2 separate keying tools provided in the base version of DFX+. The Chroma Keyer tool is perfect
for keying a specific color from an image, and the Luma Keyer tool can create a matte based on the luminance of an image, useful for things
like fire or smoke. For more challenging keying situations, the green and blue screen optimized Ultra Keyer can be found in DFX+ Module 2
as well as our Difference Keyer tool which can produce a matte based on the differences between two plates. You can also add industry
acclaimed third-party keying solutions such as Photron Primatte or Ultimatte Advantedge.
Q: What is a flow, and what does “node based” mean?
A: A timeline is perfect when viewing a series of shots over time, but compositing is often about the display of
many layers occurring at the same time. Though Fusion does provide a timeline view, which can be used to adjust the timing of various effects,
you will quickly find that the flow, or flow graph, or node view is the most commonly used interface.
A “node based” compositor refers to the way that your project is visually represented. DFX+ functions like a schematic diagram or flowchart,
each operation applied to your image is seen as a node in the flow, or as an element in the schematic. This allows you to easily follow what
is exactly happening in your composite at a glance.
Q: What is the difference between Digital Fusion and DFX+?
A: The most notable difference between Digital Fusion and DFX+ is color depth or precision. DFX+ supports image processing at
8 bits per channel, while Digital Fusion expands that support to 16 bits per channel, and 32 bits per channel.
16 bit color support is often desired for film because the extra colors allow for smoother and more accurate reproduction of the colors
captured on the film negative. Smaller degrees between colors also mean that successive color corrections will introduce less error. 16
bit processing has long been the standard for film effects.
32 bit color is often referred to as floating point color. Like 16 bit, 32 bit offers even more colors (virtually infinite) for smoother
and more precise image processing. This is not the only thing that makes float color processing attractive. Floating point colors
are easily capable of handling out of range values, such as extremely bright "brighter than white" highlights often found in film materials.
Q: What are Modules?
A: In addition to the base toolset that comes standard with DFX+ 4 (see below) you can add additional tools
and functionality through the Modules. DFX+ is essentially a modular version of our film solution, Digital Fusion, and is designed so that
people who want to take advantage of the capabilities of DF but don't necessarily need the whole toolset, can customize the package they
buy.

Q: What is included with DFX+ 4 in this bundle?
A: The current LightWave 8 upgrade promotion includes DFX+ 4 with Module 1: Visual Effects and Module 4: 3D Tools.
