Unstabilizing Footage

(Last Updated: October 31, 2001)

Using Digital Fusion's stabilization tools you can easily destabilize a foreground element to match an already unstable background scene.

Requirements: Digital Fusion 3.1+, DFX+ 3.1+ with Module 1
Flow: N/A
Images: N/A
Archive: N/A

This tip is definitely geared to our more advanced users and is just a quick tip to accomplish the above mentioned problem. Before you follow the steps below you need to first properly stabilize your unstable background plate and create the track paths.

  1. Duplicate the stabilizer tool in your flow including the tracking paths.
  2. Connect a black Background tool to the new Stabilizer tool's background input, and connect the stabilized footage tool to the foreground input.
  3. Turn on the Match Merge control and set it to the appropriate Merge Mode.

When Match Merge is turned on, instead of stabilizing the background footage it destabilizes the foreground footage so that its motion matched the background, as determined by the track paths. You can use this to destabilize previously-stabilized footage, or to simply place an element in an unstable scene.
