Interlacing Fielded Footage

(Last Updated: January 24/2006)

Requirements: Fusion 5 or higher, DFX+
Comp:  Download the Comp & materials.(8 Kb)

When producing animation for video broadcast, many animators are often required to produce fielded anuimation rather than full frame. many broadcast formats, including NTSC and PAL, use two half height fields to make a single full height frame. Though most 3D software allows you to render fielded frames, many animators prefer to produce a sequence of half height images - one for each field. This is often produces faster renders, but the images must be interlaced into a fuill frame before they can be output to tape.

For example, you might render 120 fields at 720 x 243 to produce 60 frames of NTSC fielded animation at 720 x 486. To interlace these frames, you need to use the Fields tool. Remember when rendering your images from the 3D software to render them at twice the usual framerate. For example to produce individual NTSC fields you would render at 60 fps, not 30fps.

Below are a set of instructions on Interlacing fielded footage.

  1. Add a loader to your comp, and point it to the image sequence containing the half height, double length rendering of your animation.
  1. Set the process mode of the Loader is to full frames.

  1. Now add a Fields tool to the comp, and connect it to the Loader. The Fields tool can be found under the Tools/Misc category, or using the 'Flds' button in the toolbar.
  1. Set the Operation mode of the Fields tool to "Interlace". Leave the Process Mode of the fields tool as Auto. This will cause the Fields tool to interlace every two frames together. The output of the tool will now be twice as high as the input images, with half as many frames.

  1. Add a Saver tool to the comp and connect it to your Fields tool.

Remember to set your render range to the correct length for the new fielded footage. You can do this automatically by right clicking on the Fields tool and selecting "Set Render Range" from the context menu. (Dragging the tool from the comp into the Time Ruler will also do this.)

Good Fusioning!!!
